The holidays are over and spring may still like a long way off, but Something Blue owner Sandie Walther and fashion director Rebekah Krsak already have warmer days and summer weddings on the brain. The pair traveled to the National Bridal Market in Chicago late last September to check out what the top designers had in mind for the 2017 bridal season.

Q: What designers were you most interested in seeing?

SW: We were excited about seeing Allure and Sottero and Midgley…

RK: Yes, and also Madison James and Maggie Sottero’s new line, Rebecca Ingram.

Q: Will you be carrying any new designers this year?

SW: We attended the launch party for Maggie Sottero’s new “budget-friendly” line, Rebecca Ingram. The quality and fit were excellent, and we’re so excited to bring a new price point into the store that doesn’t sacrifice quality for price.

Q: What can brides expect to see this spring?

RK: We saw a lot of customizable pieces that can be added to a dress to make it more personalized. For example, a designer might have a fitted dress and then offer a sheer skirt to go over it, or the look of a strapless dress could be changed by adding a bodysuit with long sleeves.

There’s still a lot of focus on intricate and unique backs to dresses, as well as lots of color, with the most popular being shades of champagne, blush and light gold. Everybody came out with new colors too though. Sottero & Midgely came out with a lavender dress with ivory lace over it and Allure did one in silver.

Speaking of color, another different thing is that most dresses no longer come in white because a lot of designers are doing away with it, especially white lace. We’re really seeing almost everything in ivory and colors.

Q: Any other surprises for the upcoming collections?

RK: Crepe will be a big thing, as it’s the new fabric everybody used this year. It’s a little surprising to me because it can be hard to wear, but everybody’s doing it.

SW: We’re still seeing lots of separates in both bridal and bridesmaids, so that will continue to be big this year. The other interesting things we saw were detachable trains and ruffled cuffs…think the 1960s!
