Brides and bridesmaids can always shop with confidence at Something Blue, as owner Sandie Walther and fashion director Rebekah Krsak work tirelessly to keep the hottest, up-to-date fashions in stock at the boutique. The dynamic duo travels multiple times a year to bridal and formalwear markets in Chicago and Atlanta, and works with designers to select dresses from each collection that fit with local trends and tastes.
Walther lets us in on what’s hot right now and what we can expect to see in-store as the weather heats up again next spring and summer in this quick Q&A.
Q: What styles are on-trend for bridesmaids right now?
A: Sequin gowns are really popular and I think it’s because of the new emphasis on the “party” part of the wedding. Also, glitter and sparkles are everywhere these days…and really, who doesn’t love glitter?
We’re also seeing quite a few high-low hemlines, as well as some new colors and floral prints for next season. Another really big trend is separates for bridesmaids.
Q: Selecting bridesmaid dress colors can be daunting, so what’s going to be popular next season?
A: Brides have been using very neutral color palettes more recently, so I’m very excited about the new trend toward jewel tones. For prom, emerald is the big color for this next year. Often we see wedding colors follow prom colors, so I would expect to see more emerald for this coming summer’s weddings.
We’re also seeing some new lighter colors like dusty pink, dusty violet and dusty blue. Those grey undertones somehow add a little extra formality to the colors.
Q: How do you anticipate these trends working for different body types and varied styles of weddings, from formal to casual?
A: Certainly sequin dresses work best for a more formal look, but we have many styles available in the sequins so it’s possible to choose a great style for any body type. The new jewel tone colors will work for any type of wedding and in any season.
Separates will be such a game-changer and we think bridesmaids will love them. We can order different sizes in tops and skirts, which lets us totally customize every outfit for each bridesmaid’s style and shape. Of course hems and straps will always have to be altered, but I believe bridesmaids won’t have as many fit issues that require so many extensive alterations.
